Ateneo is back-to-back PAYA Chess Overall Champion

Consisting of players from the Ateneo de Manila Grade School (AGS) and Junior High School (AJHS), the Ateneo Midgets chess team successfully defended its title in the recently-concluded 2025 Philippine Amateur Youth Association (PAYA) tournament, emerging as Overall Champion for the second straight year.
The young woodpushers of Ateneo brought home the gold medal in all six boards played during the game: Joachim Manuel (AGS 6-Miki), Board 1; Marcus Dizon (AJHS 8-Cottam), Board 2; Nyle Tapdasan (AJHS 8-Dajani), Board 3; Chio Lainez (AGS 6-Regis), Board 4; Rodolfo Ponferrada (AGS 5-Tausug), Board 5; and Austin Saulong (AGS 6-Canisius), Board 6.
The Blue Eagles bested the teams from La Salle Green Hills, De La Salle Zobel, Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College, and Lourdes School of Quezon City with a sweep, winning 16 out of 16 games played.
The Ateneo chess team was coached by Ildefonso Datu and WNM Joann Datu for the PAYA Tournament, which was held from 22-23 February 2025 at La Salle Green Hills in Mandaluyong City.
