AGS is 3-Peat Chess Champ of AAPS Unit Meet and Team Champ of Division Meet; Thad Manuel to rep QC in NCR Meet

19 Feb 2025

Ateneo de Manila Grade School chess wizards Thad Manuel (6-Miki) and Chio Lainez (6-Regis) emerged as elementary division Champion and First Runner-up, respectively, of the Athletic Association of Private Schools (AAPS) Quezon City Unit Meet on 13 December 2024. Thad achieved a perfect score with five wins and no losses, while Chio scored four wins out of five rounds.

This was a back-to-back unit meet win for both Thad and Chio, as they were also AAPS Champion and First Runner-up, respectively, in January 2024 when they were in Grade 5.

These wins in January 2024 and December 2024, along with Arjay Co’s and Marc Fua’s respective AAPS champion and first runner-up wins on 28 January 2023, means that Ateneo de Manila Grade School is three-peat champion of the AAPS Chess Unit Meet’s elementary division.

The AAPS Quezon City Unit Meet was held at the School of St Anthony Quezon City on 13 December 2024.

The division meet was held on 14 December 2024 on the 3rd floor of the Division School of Quezon City.

Thad and the division meet’s 1st runner-up (from Kaligayahan Elementary School) will thus advance and represent Quezon City in the regional meet, where they will battle it out against other division meet champs in hopes of representing NCR at Palarong Pambansa 2025.

The AGS Chess Varsity is under the expert guidance of WNM Joann Toledo-Datu.
