On Monday, 3 July 2023, the Ateneo Volleyball Program coaches and managers paid a courtesy call to University President Fr Roberto C Yap, SJ. The contingent was headed by Ateneo Athletic Director Emmanuel Fernandez and Volleyball Program Head Sherwin Malonzo.

The courtesy call introduced the Blue Eagle volleyball head coaches for both high school and college.

A new addition to the Volleyball Program this year is Coach Sergio Veloso. Coach Sergio takes over the head coach role for the Women’s Volleyball Team and brings with him more than 37 years of successfully forming programs and coaching young and professional volleyball players in Brazil, Maldives, and Bahrain. His championship experience as well as expertise in technical skills analysis and strategic planning will help the team prepare for their upcoming tournaments. Coach Sergio is also currently the Philippine National Men’s Volleyball Team Head Coach.

Another addition to the program is Coach Raymund Gerard Augustine Castillo who will be handling the boys’ and girls’ teams of the high school. Coach Babes brings with him years of experience as a champion UAAP coach in high school volleyball. He has helped develop the technical and tactical skills of each varsity athlete he previously coached. He also puts special emphasis on the character and personal development of his athletes.

Coach Timothy James Sto Tomas is no stranger to the Ateneo Volleyball Program. Coach Timmy was a member of the Men’s Volleyball Team from 2004-2009. The former Blue Eagle was also the head coach of the Ateneo high school volleyball team until 2018. Coach Timmy has consistently brought the Men’s Volleyball team to the Final Four of the UAAP and will once again take the reins this coming season. Concurrently, Coach Timmy is also a Project Officer for the University Athletics Office.

The whole Ateneo community looks back in gratitude for the years of committed service of Coach Oliver Almadro and Coach Jarod Hubalde to the Ateneo Volleyball Program.

During the courtesy call, Fr Bobby expressed his enthusiasm, “I warmly welcome Coach Babes, Coach Timmy, and Coach Sergio to the Ateneo Blue Eagles family. I am happy that we are further strengthening our volleyball program to continue its competitiveness in varsity sports. This is as we prioritize our student-athletes' individual growth as students, as individuals and citizens, and finally as athletes.”
