Tiel Blanca and Gian Alingog are PAYA chess gold medalists

Consisting of players Gian Alingog (Pamplona/10-Yuki), Tiel Blanca (Pamplona/10-Whitbread), and Luis Gutierrez (Montserrat/10-Maunoir) from Ateneo de Manila Junior High School, and Liam Batnag and Raiz Roxas from Ateneo de Manila Senior High School, the Ateneo chess team emerged as the junior division first runner-up of the Philippine Athletic Youth Association (PAYA) Chess Tournament. Individually, Alingog and Blanca both won gold awards in their assigned boards, Blanca for board 4 and Alingog for board 5.
Among the schools the Blue Eagles bested were the teams from De La Salle Zobel, La Salle Green Hills, International School Manila and Lourdes School Quezon City.
Team Ateneo was coached by Ildefonso Datu and Joann Datu for the PAYA chess tournament, which was held on September 24 and October 8, 2022 at La Salle Green Hills in Mandaluyong.
