Six AGS jins win medals in their first onsite TKD tourneys in years
08 Dec 2022
In October, six Ateneo de Manila Grade School taekwondo jins won medals in two onsite sparring tournaments held a week apart. These were the first such face-to-face competitions for the boys since the Covid pandemic resulted in restrictive lockdowns worldwide in March 2020.
Five of these six athletes won their medals for sparring/kyorugi at the National Interschool Taekwondo Competition 2022 held in Ayala Malls Manila Bay on October 1, 2022. Our sole gold medalist was Paolo Yebra (3-Pulog), who competed in the light welter toddler division. Our sole silver medalist was Samuel Ngoho (5-Tausug), who competed in the grade school heavy division. Bagging bronzes were Franco Abat (6-Xavier), Daryn Ferrer (3-Pinatubo) and Iñigo Joven (5-Manobo), who competed in the grade school feather, bantam fly toddler, and grade school novice 2 middleweight divisions, respectively.

The following week, on October 8, Cross Acal (5-Bagobo) competed in the 2022 Smart/MVPSF National Carlos Palanca Jr. (CPJ) Taekwondo Championships, winning bronze for sparring/kyorugi in the grade school black belt division. Also held at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, the CPJ competition was a national taekwondo tournament open only to black belts.
