Department of Physics
About the Ateneo de Manila Department of Physics
Through our collaborative, vibrant, and collegial faculty, we form scientists of competence and compassion who empower society
The Department of Physics provides our students with physics training that is internationally competitive and nationally relevant. We were established in the late 1960s, when the Jesuits of the Ateneo saw the need to develop competent scientists who can make a significant impact on developing science in the Philippines. Fifty years later, the department continues to pursue excellence in physics through distinct scientific endeavors in atmospheric physics, geophysics, materials science, photonics, physics education, and vacuum and plasma physics.
The department seeks to be an internationally recognized Jesuit center of excellence in physics teaching and research in the service of society. We envision a department that shall address key issues in earth systems physics, physics for sustainable development, and physics education.
The department offers two undergraduate honors programs, which are the B.S. Physics and a double degree program, B.S. Applied Physics–B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, and three graduate programs, which are the M.S. Physics, M.S. Atmospheric Science, and Ph.D. Physics.
The department research areas are Physics Education, Materials Science and Engineering, Optical Science, Engineering, and Systems, Photonics, Vacuum Science and Plasma Technology, Atmospheric Sciences, Geophysics, and Theoretical Physics.
