Undergraduate Programs
Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics - Master in Data Science (BS AMDSc - M DSc)
Programme Description
The BS AMDSc – M DSc program is a 5-year program in applied mathematics specializing in data science. It is a joint offering of the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science.
Students of the program obtain their bachelor’s degree after 4 years. Those with satisfactory academic performance are then qualified to proceed into the master’s degree program in their fifth year. The undergraduate component of the program includes the Core Curriculum of the Ateneo, the Applied Mathematics Curriculum that is compliant with the Policies, Standards and Guidelines (PSG) set out by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) and courses in Data Science.
The graduate component of the program provides further specialization in data science with strong emphasis on mathematical rigor. It includes courses in data mining, database programming, data visualization, pattern recognition, big data processing, advanced statistical methods, stochastic models, mathematical analysis, coding theory, graph theory and cryptography. Aside from these courses, an essential part of the master’s program is the capstone project. This part of the curriculum aims to provide the students with the opportunity to apply the theories that they learned in the classroom and possibly meaningfully assist a partner community or institution in addressing real-life problems.
Through the BS AMDSc-M DSc program, the partnership of the Mathematics Department and the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science aims to produce a new generation of professionals who can steer the country towards developing more sophisticated technologies, and adopting sound and efficient policies through their savvy in data analytics.

• Apply a variety of data mining techniques for modeling datasets, handling incomplete and erroneous data, and automatically predicting and classifying elements in a dataset.
• Apply big data processing and cloud computing techniques to address the scalability challenges of very large datasets.
• Complete a capstone project for a partner institution that requires the creation of mathematical models and the use of appropriate technologies to carry out computations.
Retention Criteria
BS AMDSc-M DSc majors must satisfy the following conditions in order to be retained in the program:
• At the end of first year, a grade of at least C in MATH 71.1 and an average grade of at least C (2.00) in MATH 31.1 and MATH 31.2;
• At the end of second year, an average of at least 1.90 in all major subjects offered by the Mathematics Department and Department of Information Systems and Computer Science.
