ProbSet

Problem-Solving Enrichment and Training (ProbSET) is a hybrid program that aims to build and bring together communities of educators and students passionate about nation-building through problem-solving. It is conceptualized and spearheaded by the Department of Mathematics of Ateneo de Manila University in collaboration with participating State Universities/Colleges (SUCs) and select Department of Education (Dep Ed) divisions nationwide.

The project's pilot run (in 2022) aimed to cultivate a culture of problem-solving among public school students all over the Philippines by bringing them a problem-solving enrichment and training program, inspired by the Ateneo Mathematics Olympiad (AMO) training program.

The Ateneo Mathematics Olympiad (AMO) is the annual mathematics training program of Ateneo de Manila University for Ateneo de Manila Junior High School and Senior High School students. The program is organized by the different math departments across Ateneo de Manila in collaboration with the Ateneo Mathematics Society. Spearheaded by Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, SJ, and Dr. Queena Lee-Chua in the early 2000s, the program created an avenue for young Ateneo students to develop their problem-solving skills. It envisions that these students would later play a significant role in nation-building. More than a decade later, the program continues to challenge Ateneo's brightest young minds and pique their interest in STEM.

Taking influence from AMO and the 2022 pilot run of ProbSET. ProbSET 2023 continues to aim in building a network of problem-solving trainers and enthusiasts in various parts of the Philippines. The project’s main target are public school teachers and students who exhibit interest in nonroutine problem-solving.

Specifically, the objectives of ProbSET are

●  to bridge different communities through a common passion for Mathematics;
●  to cultivate a culture of problem-solving in different provinces by bringing the Ateneo Mathematics Olympiad (AMO) training program to them;
●  to develop problem-solving trainers by enhancing SUC math teachers’ problem-solving teaching pedagogy and competence;
●  to nurture problem-solvers from students in the area of participating SUCs through increasing their problem-solving proficiency by facilitating weekly problem-solving sessions where they will acquire skills and techniques in solving non-routine problems.

ProbSET is composed of three main programs:

●  ProbSET A – Problem-Solving Trainer Enrichment Program
This is a 12-Saturday problem-solving teaching enrichment program for volunteer Trainers from participating SUCs/DepEd whose focus is on math education concepts and problem-solving techniques. The Trainers are expected to teach SHS Trainees from their respective locale. There will be 12 synchronous sessions in a span of 5 months.

Four (4) online sessions of ProbSET A will be open for teachers outside of the partner-institutions. Registration fee is Php 2,000 for 4 sessions to be conducted via Zoom. See schedule below:

This is an 8-Saturday problem-solving training program taught by coaches from the host institution, Ateneo de Manila University, and trainers who actively participated in ProbSET A. Senior high school students will be selected from the respective areas of participating DepEd Division. This training will equip students with various problem-solving skills and techniques.

●  ProbSET Olympiad
The olympiad is a culminating activity of ProbSET in the form of a written and oral problem-solving competition.
