The Department of Modern Languages equips students with the necessary basic and intermediate skills in oral and written communication in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian and acquaints them with the history, art and culture of the countries in which these languages are spoken. It also fosters their understanding and appreciation of Philippine culture in the process.
The Department seeks to be a leading center in Asia for foreign language learning in a rapidly, constantly changing world. In so being, it makes its students capable of asserting themselves in the global and local scene. The Department also seeks to form Christian leaders who possess the communication skills needed for them to interact and excel in a social, business or professional environment, and who are deeply rooted in Philippine culture and knowledgeable in foreign cultures and affairs. It does the above through partnerships with other sectors within and outside the Ateneo.
Jimson Paulo Layacan (BS MA '23) and Aengus Donaire (BS AMF '23) presented their paper titled "Revealing Causal Graph Structure in Pigeon Flocks Using Attentions in Temporal ConvNet" at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks 2023 (IJCNN 2023) in Gold Coast, Australia, from June 18 to 23.
Ateneo's Department of Mathematics launched the second iteration of Problem Solving Enrichment and Training (or ProbSET) last 22 July 2023. Here, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), West Visayas State University (WVSU), and DepEd Division of Davao de Oro (DepEd DdO) renewed their partnership with ProbSET. They were joined by new partners Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Iloilo Science and Technology University(ISAT-U), and DepEd Division of Ormoc City (DepEd Ormoc).
Last August, a group of recently graduated Applied Mathematics students presented research papers at the 4th International Conference on Applied & Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (ICoAIMS) 2023 held in Kuantan, Malaysia. Six (6) papers, which were all outputs of their respective undergraduate theses, were accepted for oral presentation. And two of them won "Best Paper" awards.
Theresa Denise C Magsajo and Kimberlee S Say, both Master in Data Science students, win 2nd runner-up as Team Blurple in the ASEAN Data Science Explorers National Finals held last 1 September 2023 in Ateneo de Manila University.
