Professor Emeritus Emma Porio to highlight the social impact of climate change at Brazilian sociology conference
03 Jul 2025
Dr Emma Porio, Professor Emeritus at Ateneo de Manila University and a respected researcher on the social impacts of climate change, is headed to São Paulo next month to take part in the Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia (SBS) conference. Ahead of the event, she’ll be sitting down for an interview with Exame, one of Brazil’s biggest weekly magazines known for its focus on economic and social issues.
The interview will explore Professor Porio’s work on how climate change is hitting vulnerable communities hardest—not just in Brazil, but across Latin America and beyond. It will also touch on the policies countries are adopting to deal with these challenges, shining a light on Brazil’s climate agenda.
Vinícius Mendes, the press officer for the conference, says the interview is a great opportunity to connect the public with these important conversations. “Exame is really one of the few media outlets in Brazil consistently highlighting climate change and its social effects,” he explains.
The chat will take place via video call next week, with the article planned to come out just as Professor Porio arrives at the conference. It’s a timely chance to raise awareness about how climate change isn’t just an environmental issue — it’s a deeply social one too.
With her participation in the SBS conference, Professor Porio continues to bring sociological perspectives to the forefront of climate discussions, reminding us all that the people most affected deserve to be heard
