Cleantramuros: a day of environmental action and cultural immersion for AJHS faculty and staff

14 Jul 2025 | Bernadette C Ilao & Anton B Alinea Jr

On 4 July 2025, Ateneo de Manila Junior High School (AJHS) faculty and staff stepped beyond the classroom to take part in a meaningful initiative that combined environmental responsibility with cultural appreciation. Their participation in the Cleantramuros Project-  an initiative organized by the Intramuros Administration (IA)- highlighted the school’s deep commitment to social involvement, sustainability, and the rich historical heritage of the Intramuros community—and the nation as a whole.

The Cleantramuros Project is a community-driven effort aligned with the IA’s mission to preserve and promote the historical and cultural legacy of Intramuros, one of the Philippines’ most iconic heritage sites. By joining this initiative, AJHS faculty and staff not only contributed to the upkeep of the Walled City, but also lived out the Ignatian values of being persons-for-others and stewards of our common home.

The day began with a clean-up drive along Bonifacio Drive and inside Fort Santiago. Undeterred by thick foliage and accumulated waste, the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and worked together to clean these historic spaces. Their collective efforts stood as a concrete expression of environmental stewardship and civic responsibility.

In the afternoon, the group took part in a walking tour that immersed them in the rich history and stunning architecture of Intramuros. From cobblestone streets to centuries-old churches and fortifications, the tour offered a reflective journey into the past, deepening the participants’ appreciation for Filipino history and culture.

A Day of Learning and Gratitude

More than just a clean-up activity, the event became a venue for values formation, community building, and experiential learning. It served as a reminder of the importance of caring for both the environment and the cultural heritage that shape our national identity.

Participants shared takeaways such as a renewed appreciation for the impact of collective action, and a strengthened desire to step outside their comfort zones in service of others.

Ria Arespacochaga quotable quote
“Ang pinaka-striking sa akin noong activity ay kung gaano kaganda sana ang lakaran o paseo ng Bonifacio Drive kung napapanatili itong malinis at ligtas. Ang lawak ng lakaran, tapos may canopy of trees pa! Parang mga lakaran sa iba’t ibang siyudad sa mga bansa sa Europa.” – Ma’am Ria Arespacochaga (center, holding trash bag)

“I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of tourists in Intramuros, on a weekday at that! Participating in the cleanup activity felt like my small contribution towards making the area more appealing to tourists and maintaining a place that encourages Filipinos to learn more about our country’s history.” – Ma’am Karen Ong (rightmost in photo)

As a gesture of gratitude and continued partnership, AJHS Principal Mrs Gen Sanvictores turned over cleaning materials to the Intramuros Administration, represented by Mr Oscar James Ledda. This symbolic act reaffirmed the vital collaboration between educational institutions and heritage conservation agencies.

This initiative is just one of the many ways AJHS continues to integrate social involvement, environmental sustainability, and cultural awareness into its educational mission—nurturing not only minds, but also hearts dedicated to the common good.

The activity forms part of Gabay at Agapay Para sa Bayan (Gabayan), which is AJHS’ social involvement program for teachers, staff, and stakeholders. Gabayan aims to align and strengthen the personal values of AJHS employees while responding to the needs of partner institutions through service-oriented initiatives.
