Ateneo’s Emma Porio named lead author for IPCC special report on climate change and cities

13 Feb 2025

Climate Action
Partnerships for the Goals

Ateneo de Manila University’s Professor Emeritus, Dr Emma La Porio (Socio-Anthropology-RGL-School of Social Sciences) has been selected as a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change and Cities.

The world’s leading body on climate science, IPCC, received over 1,200 expert nominations for the report, but only one in twelve candidates was selected. A rigorous selection process determined the final list of authors and review editors, ensuring a balance of scientific, technical, and socio-economic expertise and geographical and gender representation.

Dr Porio’s inclusion highlights her significant contributions to climate research, particularly in urban resilience and sustainability. As a Lead Author, she will help shape critical discussions on how cities worldwide can adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Dr Porio is also the lead investigator of the Coastal Cities At Risk in the Philippines.

The report is expected to provide key insights for policymakers and stakeholders as global efforts to address climate challenges continue.

The list of Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities can be found here.
