Book launch of “Social Values: Pathways to Development by Fr Francisco Araneta, SJ. A Collection of His Essays”, edited by Raul Gonzalez

The Ateneo de Manila University community gathered on Friday, the 20th of September 2024 at the Hurtado Hall, Social Development Complex, to partake in the momentous event for the launch of the book entitled, “Social Values: Pathways to Development by Fr Francisco Araneta, SJ. A Collection of His Essays”, edited by Raul Gonzalez and published by the Assisi Development Foundation (ADFI). The event was attended by University administrators, esteemed colleagues in social development work and Fr Araneta’s family members.
The ADFI partnered with the Ateneo School of Government in launching the book that honors the writings and ideas of Fr Francisco Araneta who helped lay the foundations of the Ateneo de Manila University’s commitment to the development of the poor in the 1960s and 1970s. The Launch was also undertaken in commemoration of the 106th birthday of Fr Araneta.
The book project was initiated by former Ambassador Howard Dee, Chairperson of the ADFI, who recently passed away. Fr Araneta helped former Ambassador Dee in founding the ADFI. In addition, Fr Araneta also helped found institutions and organizations such as the Partnership for Development Assistance in the Philippines, the Philippine Business for Social Progress and the SPES Institute, which in turn, were the inspiration for the Sarilikha organization and the Office for Social Concern and Involvement of the University.
The book launch commenced with opening remarks by Fr Roberto C Yap SJ, University President, and welcome remarks by Mr. Benjamin Abadiano, ADFI President. Fr Bienvenido Nebres SJ, former University President, gave an introduction to Fr Francisco Araneta SJ. and shared his personal encounters with him emphasizing on the greatness of Fr Araneta’s personhood and a life of significance and service to others. The book and its aspirations were introduced by the editor, Mr Raul Gonzalez. Dr Patricia Irene Dacudao, Chair of the History Department, Mr Edmundo Garcia, Commissioner and 1987 Constitutional Commission Member (remarks read by Dr Benjamin Gerardo Tolosa Jr, Vice President for Mission Integration), and Mr Justin Altubar, Student Volunteer of the Office for Social Concern and Involvement, served as key reactors who also shared their insights on the book. Ms Ma. Carmen Alcuaz Reyes, a niece of Fr Araneta, conveyed, on behalf of the Araneta family, a special thanks to all those who remembered and recognized the great work and inspiration of Fr Araneta. The event concluded with the book stamping and a desire that his ideals will continue to inspire Ateneo and the greater society to embolden pursuit for genuine social transformation.
