AGS mathlete Luc Lopez is 2023 HK Olympiad Heat Round’s ‘Perfect Scorer’

(LATE POST) Sixteen Ateneo de Manila Grade School mathletes won medal awards in the two rounds of the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) 2023 last school year. The HKIMO competition consists of two rounds, namely the Philippine Heat Round (HR) and the Final Round (FR). The Heat Round took place online on 28 May 2023 while the Final Round was held online and onsite in Hong Kong on 26 August 2023. Only those contestants who won medal awards (gold, silver, bronze) in the Heat Round were invited to join the Final Round.

Leading the Ateneo awardees was current Grade 3 mathlete Luc Lopez (2-Katmon in SY 2023-2024), who won gold and achieved a Perfect Score in the Heat Round, then went on to win a gold medal in the Final Round.

The HKIMO is an annual math exam that was developed to promote math Olympiads all over the world. The exam consists of five main topics: Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Combinatorics.
The HKIMO Final Round 2023 attracted more than 2000 participants from countries such as Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Approximately 800 of them competed onsite while around 1300 participated online. This year’s medalists won 117 golds, 159 silvers, and 175 bronzes across the HKIMO’s 10 age groups.
The HKIMO provides a platform for pupils with a strong interest in mathematics, and is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Its goals are to stimulate and foster young people’s interest in learning mathematics, strengthen their creative thinking, and widen their international perspective.
