Conference Announcement and Final Call for Papers
12th ACAS International Conference on Asian Studies

Theme:
Artificial Intelligence in Asian Realities:
Opportunities, Challenges, Risks and Social Dynamics

14-15 November 2024;  In-person and hybrid sessions
Venue: Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines

Conference Website:  ateneo.edu/icas12

The Theme

The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on life across the global landscape is imminent. Yet the Global North’s dominance in this field of knowledge persists while there are gaps in research that specifically examines AI in light of Asian realities. There is need for robust discussions, insightful discourse, and vigorous debates that will shed light on AI's implications in the Asian context.

The 12th ACAS International Conference on Asian Studies (ACAS ICAS 12) aims to amplify the significance of AI within Asia's diverse sociocultural, economic, and political tapestry through a multidisciplinary and translocal perspective.  It seeks to bring to light knowledge and foster informed discussions on AI’s transformative potentials in Asia,  the contours of Asian societies shaped by AI, and the Asian perspective on humanity’s future with AI.  It is hoped that the conference will help narrow gaps in contemporary AI research in the region.

Final Call for Papers up to 15 September

ACAS ICAS 12 invites proposals for individual papers, panels and roundtable discussions that illuminate the interplay between AI and diverse facets of Asian studies including the following:

  1. Religion and spirituality: The confluence of AI and religious belief systems, ethics, rituals, and spiritual experiences in Asian cultures.
  2. Socio-political dimensions of AI: AI's implications on governance, political processes, policy-making, social justice, and power dynamics in Asian contexts.
  3. Sub-regional narratives: The distinct AI narratives, challenges, and opportunities across sub-regions including Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, North Asia, West Asia, and Russia.
  4. Socio-economic equity: How AI intersects with socioeconomic disparities, labor markets, income distribution, and inclusive development in Asian societies.
  5. Cultural transformations: The impact of AI on traditional and contemporary cultures, language preservation, arts, and cultural heritage in Asia.
  6. Education and skills development: AI's role in reshaping education, skills acquisition, and lifelong learning initiatives.
  7. Privacy and ethics: Ethical dilemmas, data privacy concerns, and normative frameworks governing AI deployment in Asian societies.
  8. Environment:  AI's role in promoting environmental sustainability and eco-friendly innovations.
  9. Media, pop culture, and leisure: The integration of AI into media, pop culture, leisure and entertainment, and its influence on content creation and audience engagement throughout Asia.
  10. National and regional security: AI's impact on security strategies, threat analysis, and geopolitical dynamics in Asian nations and regions.

Interdisciplinary collaborations and diverse viewpoints that collectively illuminate the societal, cultural, political, and ethical ramifications of AI across Asia are particularly encouraged.

Cultural presentations including exhibits and posters expounding on the theme are likewise welcome.
