Five Ateneo de Manila Senior High School mathletes won medals in the Heat (national) Round of the 2023 Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) last school year. Leading the awardees was Lance Abarquez (11-Wright), who won gold. Following him was Xavier Algenio (11-Nakaura) with a silver award. Bagging bronze were Savi San Juan (12-Daniel), Jessy Manuel (12-Oldcorne), and Leanne Wang (12-Bobola).

In the HKIMO Final Round which was held online and onsite in Hong Kong on 26 August 2023, Abarquez secured the silver while Manuel bagged bronze once again. Only those contestants who won gold, silver, or bronze in the Heat Round were invited to join the Final Round.
The 2023 HKIMO Final Round attracted more than 2000 participants from countries such as Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Approximately 800 of them competed onsite while around 1300 participated online. This year’s medalists won 117 golds, 159 silvers, and 175 bronzes across the HKIMO’s 10 age groups.
The HKIMO provides a platform for pupils with a strong interest in mathematics, and is open to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. It is different from other math Olympiads in that it offers standardized topics such as Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry and Combinatorics. Its goals are to stimulate and foster young people’s interest in learning mathematics, strengthen their creative thinking, and widen their international perspective.
