Two AJHS teams win gold in Gizmos PH STEM Competition

Two teams of Ateneo de Manila Junior High School students won the gold medal in their respective age categories in the Gizmos Philippines (national level) STEM Competition held in December 2023. Stan Dumbrique (8-Collins), Johann Agustin (8-Cottam), Sean Villalonga (7-Balmain), and Enzo Hernandez (7-Balmain) of AJHS Team A won the gold in Category 2 (Middle Years Grades 6-8) for their study, “Leveraging Technology to Reduce Hunger and Improve Food Production and Sustainability.” Meanwhile, in Category 3 (Secondary/High School Grades 9-12), Sandro Chan (9-Lalemant), Dominic Pelingo (9-Lewis), Jerome Caluya (10-Pongracz), Daniel Park (10-Sitjar), and Herson Ofrecio (10-Spinola) of AJHS Team B won gold for their study, “Effectiveness of Different Wavelengths of Light (nm) on the Amount of Oxygen Produced by Plants Through Photosynthesis in Reducing the CO2 Levels in Landfills.” AJHS A was coached by Miguel Manaois while AJHS B was coached by Hana Garcia.


Among the schools which were also named Category 2 and 3 winners in the national round of the competition were De La Salle Lipa, Sta Teresa College, Immaculate Conception College of Balayan Inc, Saint Louis University-Basic Education School, Colegio San Agustin Makati, Saint Paul College of Parañaque, St Scholastica’s College-Westgrove, and Marian College Inc.


Gold medalists from all categories will represent the Philippines in the Spring 2024 Gizmos Global STEM Competition to be held abroad later this year. Gizmos is the world’s largest library of math and science simulations.
