AJHS mathlete Paco Javier helps Team PH win gold in Mustang Math Tournament
04 Feb 2024
A team of Filipino middle school mathletes successfully represented the Philippines in the Mustang Math Tournament, winning several awards in the event that was held online on August 9, 2023. Among the members of Team Philippines was our very own Ateneo de Manila Junior High School math wizard Paco Javier from 7-Alfonso.
The medals and awards which Paco and his teammates won for the country were a gold medal overall in the Foal Division, first place for the “Mystery Mare” round, and second place for the “Herding Hexes” round. Not bad at all, considering it was the first time for the Philippines to participate in this competition!

Established in 2020, the Mustang Math Tournament is for middle school students all over the world. It is organized by Mustang Math, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run by high school and college students, including the directors of the Stanford and Berkeley Math Tournaments.
The tournament emphasizes teamwork and collaboration, incentivizing students to work with their teams not only to navigate the challenging but interesting problems of the tournament, but also to develop strategies to master the unique, game-like rounds. These are the logic-based puzzle round, the strategy-filled bingo round, the race-like gallop round, and the trademark "Mystery Mare" round.
