Ateneo de Manila Senior High School students Keean Tang (12-Sullivan, Class of 2022), Evgeny Cruz (12-Miki), and Steffi Teh (12-Walpole) are among only six mathletes from the Philippines who notched top finishes for the country in China’s most grueling math challenge, the China Northern Mathematics Olympiad (CNMO). Keean Tang led the ASHS mathletes with a second-place finish in the Grade 12 division, while Evgeny Cruz and Steffi Teh both placed third in the Grade 11 division.

Held online on August 8-9, 2022, the CNMO attracted mathletes from Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, and the China provinces of Beijing, Hebei, Inner Mongolian, Jiangsu, Jilin, Shanghai, Shanxi, and Tianjin. The 2022 CNMO was described by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines as “one of the world’s most difficult math contests,” and says that placing among the winners in the said Olympiad is “a staggeringly impressive feat.”
