FEATURE | Is the posting of student photos a data privacy problem?

UNITED STATES – There have always been questions over whether it is ethically permissible for schools to publish student images, particularly those containing identifying information. This is particularly relevant since according to a study, 4.9 million images containing identifiable students have been found online, and about 726,000 posts also featured full names and approximate locations. NEWS |High Court weighs in on debate re: CCTV cameras in Delhi gov’t schools

INDIA – The Delhi High Court deemed two petitions opposing the installation of CCTV cameras over privacy concerns as “premature” and ordered Delhi government to submit a Standard Operating Procedure. The High Court cited the importance of the cameras for the safety of the children, and noted that they will address the issues raised once the SOP has been established. READ MORE

 

NEWS | Schools hit by cyber attack leading to leak of documents

UNITED KINGDOM – Highly confidential documents from 14 schools were leaked online by the hacking group, Vice Society. The exposed documents include children’s SEN information, child passport scans, staff pay scales and contract details taken in 2021 and 2022. READ MORE

 

NEWS | Council launches investigation after claims of unauthorized posting of vulnerable child’s picture

SCOTLAND – The East Ayrshire Council has initiated an investigation into the alleged posting of a vulnerable child's picture on social media. It has been alleged that this is the third time the child's image has been uploaded online without authorization, and may represent a violation of data privacy laws. READ MORE

 

NEWS | Pushback against SIM registration in the Philippines seen as India introduces facial recognition checks

PHILIPPINES – SIM card registration got off to a quick start in the Philippines, despite some technical difficulties on the first day. During the first ten days, about 15 million people managed to register with the system. That figure has since climbed to 18.5 million, as of the time of this writing. READ MORE
