On October 24, 2022, the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG), through Ateneo Policy Center (APC), organized a brown bag session titled “Understanding the US-PH Bilateral Relations: Building a Strong Foundation for Economic Cooperation” at Pacifico Ortiz Hall of  Ateneo School of Government in Ateneo de Manila University-Loyola Heights Campus. The presentation was led by Prof. Nadia Doytch, PhD, APC Research Fellow and Professor of Economics from City University of New York Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, together with Adrian Matthew Glova, MS, APC Research Associate.

Various experts participated in the academic exercise including Dr. Randy Tuaño, Dean of ASOG, and APC Senior Research Fellows namely, Dr. Ronald Mendoza, Dr. Philamer Torio, and Dr. Imelda Deinla. In attendance as well were faculty members from Ateneo de Manila University - Loyola Schools including Asst. Prof. Ser Percival Peña-Reyes, PhD, Director of Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development and Chair of Department of Economics, and  Asst. Prof. Leslie Advincula-Lopez, PhD, Director of Development Studies Program, and other senior researchers and staff of APC.

In her presentation, Dr. Doytch highlighted the tangible gains from century-long bilateral strong relations between the US and the Philippines and how the US foreign direct investments (FDIs) contributed to expanded operations of domestic enterprises, enabled knowledge and technology transfer, and facilitated countryside development.

This study is part of an ongoing initiative of the Ateneo Policy Center, in partnership with the US Embassy, which aims to provide a deeper analysis of the bilateral relations between the US and Philippines by assessing trade and FDIs from the US and its implications to the economy and national security of the Philippines and produce a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the contribution of foreign investments to Philippine economic growth.
