Stories from the Tribe

“When one teaches, two learn.” - Robert Heinlein

Last week’s STORIES FROM THE TRIBE, told by educators from the five Loyola Schools, seemed to have centered around this theme of learning by teaching within our shared human experiences.

In celebration of World Teachers’ Month, the Ateneo SALT Institute invited teachers from each of the Loyola Schools to share their stories of joy, upheaval, insight and inspiration.  STORIES FROM THE TRIBE was featured during the Teachers’ Appreciation Week Culminating Program hosted by CELADON at the Colayco Pavilion.

LS faculty and administrators gathered on campus and online via livestream to listen to the stories of Anjo Lorenzana (SOSS), Ron Cruz (SOSE), Devi Paez (SOH), Oman Tanchingco (JGSOM) and Francis Alvarez SJ (GBSEALD).  Given the prompt “I never expected that…” each storyteller took the mic in different directions to speak about personal experiences that were unique to each, but somehow also universally shared at the heart of teachers everywhere.

Dr Anjo Lorenzana reflects on how moving online challenged some perceptions about teaching.

Dr Ron Cruz ponders over a dinner invitation from his students.

What could Ms Devi Paez possibly have in common with a rambutan?

Mr Oman Tanchingco is learning more from his longitudinal research dissertation than he expected.

Fr Francis Alvarez SJ.  Period.

It was an evening of gifts, as CELADON members also presented University President, Fr Bobby Yap SJ with a mural painted by LS students.  The rest of the program serenaded and celebrated our teachers as they truly deserved.

We hope that our storytellers found as much meaning in sharing, as everyone in the audience did in listening.   That’s a wrap on the first-ever ‘Stories from the TRIBE’.  Yes, first – because how nice it would be to make this a more regular ‘stage’ where the stories or our teachers can be heard.
