The Ateneo Policy Center’s Health Governance team, led by its Senior Research Fellow Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go, went on a site visit to San Miguel, Bulacan last September 5, 2022. The team explored opportunities for capacity-building and advancing policy reforms for barangay health workers (BHWs).
During the fieldwork, the team, together with Maximillan Ventura, former Executive Director of Philam Foundation, met with Sr. Aileen Bonifacio of St. Paul University to discuss the use of facilities for the conduct of the study. In the spirit of collaboration, the team also explored the prospect of partnering with the university to train and enhance the competencies of BHWs in San Miguel, Bulacan.
The Health Governance Team met with Dr. Hamir Hechanova of the Municipal Health Office to gain an overview of the experiences of BHWs. They also attended a courtesy call with Mayor Roderick Tiongson, exploring the potential of replicating the project’s output model and policy recommendation across the municipality.
The fieldwork in San Miguel is an expression of the Ateneo School of Government’s longstanding commitment of leading reforms and a step towards advancing inclusive health in the country.
