28 Mar 2022
On 17 March 2022, the Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) participated in the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Business Summit. The event tackled reforms in the BOC to curb corruption and streamline institutional processes through the implementation of data analytics and the Performance Governance System. As part of its ongoing partnership with the BOC, the ASoG, through Dr. Philamer Torio and Mr. Paul Feliciano, presented their work on utilizing data analytics to modernize the Philippine Customs in order to improve institutional efficiency and revenue generation.
Their presentation, “Towards a Modern PH Customs: Building Data Analytics Capabilities”, provided the components of the ‘BoC-ASoG Governance Tool Suite’, or a set of specific tools developed by both the ASoG and BOC. The intention of this suite is to help PH customs offices with their planning and budgeting objectives while also making them more versatile to future global and domestic trade shocks. These tools made use of publicly available data for revenue forecasting, the analysis of import and revenue structures, and analytics of commodities across all BOC ports.
Representatives from the MAP, the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX), and the Makati Business Club were also in attendance. Prior to the ASoG presentation, the BOC Commissioner, Hon. Rey Leonardo B. Guerror, discussed current reforms in the BOC and answered questions from the audience after his presentation.
