From 21 November to 2 December 2024, Ateneo Blue Nest Incubation Program representatives embarked on a transformative study mission to Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. This initiative, supported by the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), aimed to benchmark best practices in technology business incubation, foster international collaboration, and enhance innovation within the Philippine startup ecosystem.

The delegation visited prominent institutions, including Sophia University, Meiji University, Osaka University, the NARA Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), and Leave A Nest Japan. Additionally, they participated in the renowned Osaka Hack Conference. These engagements provided a wealth of insights and inspiration for advancing innovation in the Philippines.

At Sophia University, the team witnessed a robust research promotion system designed to guide startups from early-stage research to commercialization. With a focus on resource allocation and engaging researchers in entrepreneurial activities, Sophia University serves as a model for fostering academic innovation.

Leave A Nest Japan offered a unique perspective on startup incubation and acceleration. The organization provides a comprehensive framework for early-stage startups to thrive by combining mentorship, funding, and market-entry support. Their focus on entrepreneurial development and cross-border scaling offered valuable lessons for expanding the reach of Filipino startups.

The Osaka Hack Conference served as a platform to explore global trends in sustainability and innovation. Engaging with thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators sheds light on the challenges and opportunities within the worldwide startup ecosystem.

Through these experiences, the team identified strategies to strengthen the Ateneo Blue Nest Incubation Program. These include adopting structured pathways for research commercialization, enhancing university-industry partnerships, and integrating mentorship programs that prepare startups for international markets. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and emerging technologies will guide Ateneo’s efforts to align with global innovation trends.

This mission would not have been possible without the support of DOST-PCIEERD and the generous insights shared by Japanese institutions. The knowledge gained will significantly empower Filipino startups and foster an ecosystem that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

As we build upon these learnings, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) warmly invites international partners to join us in fostering innovation and advancing technology-driven ventures. Whether you are an academic institution, research center, incubator, or startup accelerator, we are eager to explore potential collaborations enabling knowledge exchange, joint research initiatives, and cross-border commercialization opportunities.

Together, we can create a meaningful impact by supporting emerging startups, bridging the gap between research and industry, and driving sustainable innovation. Let’s work hand in hand to build a stronger global innovation ecosystem.
