Continuous Development and Resilience Planning in Mandaue City with support from the National Resilience Council and CCARPH Principal Investigator Emma Porio
02 Jul 2024
In June 2024, Mayor Jonas Cortes led Mandaue City's ongoing development in collaboration with the National Resilience Council (NRC). Recently, the NRC updated Mayor Cortes on the "Adopt-A-City" initiative, which started in February. This project enhances the city's resilience through strategic partnerships and community involvement.
The "Adopt-A-City" project, a collaboration between the NRC and the Mandaue City Government, aims to create a resilience pathway with significant input from the private sector. Mayor Cortes highlights the importance of stakeholder excellence and community engagement in achieving resilience goals.
Critical programs include the development of eco-parks, mangrove reforestation, and balancing environmental protection with resource generation. Despite investments in disaster preparedness, Mandaue City seeks to further develop resilience through existing assets, policies, and collaborations with neighboring cities and private sector entities.
The initiative receives significant scientific and technological support from CCARPH scientists, led by Professor Emeritus Emma Porio from Ateneo de Manila University, in partnership with the NRC. Fr. Mike Pineda from Ateneo de Cebu also plans to turn the eight-hectare campus into an ecology learning laboratory for students.
Efforts include introducing the Resilience Hub to Mandaue City Comprehensive High School and assessing the Vivant Desalination Plant in Cordova, Cebu, addressing critical water and food security issues for island economies.
Mayor Jonas Cortes's leadership in resilience and development is evident, with a commitment to improving Mandaue City's strategies through innovative and collaborative efforts.
The NRC and the Coastal Cities at Risk in the Philippines Project (CCARPH) approach to the resilient and sustainable development of cities is through public-private people partnerships (4Ps).
