Ateneo Dream Team, Ateneo Innovation Center install water treatment systems in towns affected by typhoons Agaton and Odette
02 Jun 2022 | Milet Tendero and Reymond Cao
The Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC), in partnership with the Ateneo Disaster Response and Management (Dream) Team, conducted its Ateneo Resilient Technology Deployment installation of water treatment systems in 12 barangays of the province of Capiz that were severely affected by Tropical Storm Agaton in early April 2022.
From April 26 to May 4, 2022, the AIC team composed of Engr. Paul Cabacungan, Mr. Reymond Cao, Mr. Mario Naval, Mr. Edwin Precones, Mr. Dioscoro Luteria, and Mr. Randy Pelicia travelled by boat and bus to the barangays of Blasco, Binaobawan, Balogo, Dayhagan, Sinamongan, Monteflor, Jamul-awon, Catmon, Cabugao, Poblacion, Vizcaya, and Tacas, to conduct demonstration and hands-on training with the local residents, and testing and installation of clean water systems and near-cloud systems in each of the barangays to enable the communities with a more resilient preparedness to disasters that regularly hit their areas. The clean water and near-cloud systems harvest rainwater and go through a process of filtration and purification to produce clean, potable drinking water. The water systems are fabricated and tested by the AIC team themselves.

AIC installed same water systems in Cebu towns affected by Super Typhoon Odette
Last January 24 to February 5, 2022, the AIC team of Engr. Cabacungan, Mr. Cao, and Mr. Nuval, travelled to Cebu to conduct the same Ateneo Resilient Technology Deployment installation of water treatment systems in Cebu City and Madridejos, Alegria, Cebu that experienced water scarcity as an effect of Super Typhoon Odette in late December 2021. The AIC team also trained the local residents on water testing and water disinfection, rainwater catchment, hands-on clean water plumbing components and assembly, and on the water systems’ solar components assembly and operation. Aside from the clean water systems, AIC donated and provided training on the fabrication and construction of a brick stove and oven with chimney and copper pipe water heating provision to students, teachers, and local technicians of the affected communities.

AIC installed same water systems in Panaon Island, Southern Leyte
On February 14-21, 2022, AIC was able to install solar clean water systems in communities in 3 barangays in Panaoan Island in Southern Leyte that likewise suffered from the devastation of Typhoon Odette. With the help of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), AIC was able to install the water systems in Barangay Benit, San Ricardo, Barangay Tautug, Pintuyan, and in Barangay Anislagon, San Francisco. AIC also donated 2 units of near-cloud systems to SLSU in the hope that these systems can help SLSU in their learning module distribution and other use cases.
We thank the magnanimous support of the Dream Team donors whose donations made this effort possible. We also thank the cooperation of the LGUs of these provinces and barangays that welcomed the AIC team and extended a comfortable stay in their communities.
