Student Volunteers Rescue Baby Trees to Secure the Future!

As part of the TALAB activities on October 8 2019, the Ateneo Wild held Hope for the Wild: A Wildling Collection Activity where student volunteers helped collect wildlings from the large campus Baguilumbang tree (Reautealis trisperma). Wildlings are seedlings that are not cultivated and have sprouted in the wild. These wildlings remain under the mother trees but do not often survive because there isn't enough sunlight, among other landscape constraints.

We may sometimes think that forests exist far from our daily urban experiences, but our urban forests exist and help provide various ecosystem services such as shade, fresh air and, in this case, seeds for the future. Around one hundred wildlings were rescued, repotted and donated to the EDC Binhi project and will be grown until they are big enough to be planted in reforestation efforts around the Philippines.
