Undergraduate Studies
Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies is an interdisciplinary and area study focusing on the political, economic, cultural and social dynamics of China. It is the only academic program in the Philippines dedicated to the study of China. Students of AB Chinese may choose from three specializations — Business, Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Specialization in Business covers the fundamentals of business in a Chinese context. The Specialization in Arts and Culture focuses on aesthetic theories and the literature and arts of China. The Specialization in Social Sciences provides a broad introduction to the social realities in China and frameworks for analyzing them.
Depending on their personal interests and career choices, Ateneo undergraduate students of Chinese Studies may direct their study to a specialization in either the tracks. At its core, though, is a structured curriculum designed to equip students with a comprehensive knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and an understanding of Chinese history and culture.
Students also have the option to apply for a Junior Year Abroad, where they will have three semesters during their third year: April to July at ADMU, August to December (Fall Term) and February to May (Spring Term) at The Jesuit Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (TBC) or Peking University in Beijing, China.
Whatever the chosen specialization, therefore, the Ateneo Chinese Studies Program graduate understands China and its neighboring countries — its integration, institutions, principles and policies; examines and assesses China’s impact in world affairs and in the further integration of the Asia-Pacific region; critically evaluates China-Philippine political, economic, social and cultural relations; applies economic, political and cultural concepts and methods applicable in doing research on China; participates and discusses the implications of China foreign policy on Philippines; and develops confidence, competence and proficiency in the use of Mandarin language that will enhance their employability in the academe, business, government, non-government organizations, and international organizations.
- AB CHINESE STUDIES is a standalone degree course, but it may also be taken by students who desire a double degree. The pursuit of a double major, combining AB Chinese Studies with other courses such as BS Management, Fine Arts, and History, among others, is a very viable and practical study choice for a globally competitive graduate.
- The AB Chinese Studies graduate is able to navigate careers in business, academe, publications, and international relations.
Specializations
Specialization in Arts and Culture
Study Chinese culture using analytical and critical methods. The Arts and Culture specialization looks at China, its art, and culture, through the lenses of history, sociology, and humanities. It offers a philosophical perspective of China and the Chinese, and their influences throughout the world.
Specialization in Business
With China's growing economic power, the world's economic balance, and consequently business, will foreseeably start to tip towards Asia and its constituents. Learn the language and nuances of doing business in and with China and the Chinese through a Specialization in Business.
Specialization in Social Sciences
There is much to study about China as a state and how it is vis-à-vis its neighbors; how its people are; and what makes a Chinese society. There is also much to be said about China and how it relates to us and our daily lives. Make that critical determination yours through a Specialization in Social Sciences.
