Master in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language
The Program
The Masters in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Program aims to develop professional high-caliber Chinese language teachers for K-12 schools and universities. It is offered by the Ateneo de Manila University Chinese Studies Program and Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment in collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen University, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Ateneo Confucius Institute. This Program consists of graduate level subjects in education, advanced Chinese language, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The Program also offers an option to study in China during the Intersession Semester of the first year with subsidy. Furthermore, partial scholarships and subsidies for textbooks related to Teaching Chinese will be available to students.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must fulfill basic ADMU eligibility requirements for graduate admissions. In addition, one must also have considerable experience in teaching Mandarin Chinese at any level, and have at least HSK Level 4 Chinese proficiency. Filipino and foreign teachers are both welcome to apply.
Curriculum
The curriculum combines courses on pedagogy and education research with courses on advanced Mandarin language, Chinese Studies, and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Courses are taught by expert faculty either in English or Mandarin.
Scholarships
The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) has allocated an annual scholarship subsidy for Filipino citizens. This will be in the form of 50% tuition fee subsidy and full subsidy for basic and miscellaneous fees.
Experienced teacher with outstanding credentials and strong recommendation will be considered. Accepted scholars must maintain an average grade of B+ throughout the course of study and must not have any failing marks. They must also complete the program in two years. In addition, Filipino citizens teaching in DepEd recognized schools are qualified to avail of the ADMU 50% tuition fee discount for Education Department graduate programs. Therefore, it is possible for an applicant to be qualified to be awarded both grants and enjoy full scholarship.
Official Curriculum
This program prepares students with Chinese language proficiency to become effective language teachers. The course offers advanced courses in the Chinese language and training in the pedagogy and methodology of teaching a foreign language.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
The student must demonstrate an ability to speak and write in both Chinese and English
COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS
EDUC 296 Comprehensive Examinations
Upon completion of the coursework, the student must take and pass a Comprehensive Exams comprised of both written and oral. The comprehensive exams will cover the first five courses under the field of concentration (CSP 211, CSP 212, CSP 213, CSP 214, and CSP 215). The written exam covers CSP 211, CSP 214 and CSP 215 and will be administered in Chinese. The oral exam will cover the Chinese language courses (CSP 212 and CSP 213) and will be conducted in Chinese. Professors from the Chinese Studies Program will conduct this portion of the exam.
INTEGRATING PAPER 6 units
EDUC 298 Integrating Paper (6 units)
A course where the student designs, prepares, and writes a research-based practicum paper on a selected area of instruction and learning. The project should be an application of basic concepts, principles, and theories in education and should be relevant to the student’s institution.
CSP 211
ASPECTS OF CHINA
3 units
The course covers the most essential elements of Chinese history, geography, culture, etc., with a special focus on modern China. The course aims to equip Chinese language teachers with a solid foundation in the history and culture of China in order to see how the Chinese language is linked to the country’s unique experience.
CSP 212
MODERN CHINESE
3 units
This course focuses on a systematic study of modern Chinese phonetics, vocabulary, characters, and grammar. (It is called Modern Chinese to distinguish it from Classical Chinese). It aims to lay a solid foundation in the Chinese language for purposes of teaching, and enable students to adopt a teaching approach focusing on Conversational Chinese.
CSP 213
ADVANCE CHINESE
3 units
With reading and writing as its focus, this course aims to improve students’ skills in reading and writing for academic research, as well as speaking and listening for presentations and official high-level or business conversations.
CSP 214
TEACHING CHINESE AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
3 units
This course aims to provide a systematic study and approach to the practice of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the Philippines. Students learn theories of second language acquisition, pedagogical principles of second language teaching, and studies and principles related to teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the Philippine context.
CSP 215
TEACHING CHINESE: DESIGN AND PRACTICE
3 units
This course covers curriculum design, development of learning materials, and classroom management practices of Chinese language classes. Students learn to design courses and understand the theories and principles of second-language teaching that inform the design. This course seeks to bridge theory and practice and enable the teacher to realize pedagogical objectives in actual practice.
CSP 216
TEACHING CHINESE: TEST AND ASSESSMENT
3 units
The course covers the objectives, features and different types of assessment, including the degrees of difficulty, efficiency and classification, in preparing and analyzing student examinations. It provides students with skills in test construction, test analysis, and student assessment.
