I. Brief Description
The Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) is the public policy academic arm of the Ateneo de Manila University. Its long-term mission is to teach and work with effective and ethical public servants to build prosperous, sustainable, just, and happy communities in the Philippines, empowered by democratic, participatory, transparent, and accountable governance institutions and processes. Through its research and extension programs, and its work with public, private and civil society organizations, ASOG aims to develop and foster innovative ideas and approaches in order to change mindsets and systems in such areas as leadership, poverty eradication, climate change, social accountability, and politics.
As a graduate school for leadership and public service, ASOG's academic and executive education programs bridge the gap between classroom wisdom and real-world policy decision-making and governance. Through its research and extension programs, and its work with public, private, and community organizations, ASOG continues to develop and foster innovative ideas and approaches in areas such as leadership, poverty eradication, climate change, social accountability, and politics.
II. Scope of Work
The Statistician will join a project development team that is expected to work on a research study examining youth perceptions and behaviors toward democratic exercises in the country—the outputs of which shall be submitted to the Ateneo Policy Center Head. The Statistician is expected to:
- Provide research and technical inputs to the Ateneo Policy Center Head and Project including, but not limited to:
- Survey the existing literature on study themes and robust methodological approaches.
- Review policy responses and the empirical evidence on their effectiveness.
- Development of empirical methodologies and databases to underpin evidence-based analyses of policies and socio-economic trends; and
- Statistical analysis support to the assigned research initiatives, including data gathering methodologies and analysis of micro-data.
- Provide overall technical and operational assistance to the Ateneo Policy Center Head and the Project Manager in developing communications content and strategies, such as but not limited to websites, social media posts, press releases, policy briefs, etc.;
- Attend all meetings, events, and functions as deemed necessary by the Ateneo Policy Center and ID Project Manager; and
- Prepare periodic reports and other documentation requirements for internal and external reporting.
III. Qualifications
Applicants for the Statistician position must have the following qualifications:
- Advanced university degree (Masters, ABD or PhD) in economics, public policy and/or international development policy with a focus on quantitative analysis (on-going completion of an advanced degree may be considered);
- Significant training in statistical analysis, ideally involving experience in applied econometric analysis of social, economic, and development indicators;
- Thematic familiarity with public finance, governance and institutions, and/or political economy;
- Advanced knowledge of using statistical analysis platforms such as STATA, SPSS, or R;
- Project management experience is an advantage;
- Excellent communication skills for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams; and
- Self-management, as evidenced by the ability to deliver outputs with minimum supervision.
