TERMS OF REFERENCE
Position: Research Assistant
Duration: Three Months (initial contract; subject to renewal)
I. Brief Description
The Ateneo School Government (ASOG) is the public-sector arm of the Ateneo de Manila University. The School’s long-term mission is to teach and work with effective and ethical public servants. It aims to contribute in building prosperous, sustainable, just, and happy communities in the Philippines, empowered by democratic, participatory, transparent, and accountable governance institutions and processes.
As a graduate school for leadership and public service, ASOG's academic and executive education programs bridge the gap between classroom wisdom and real-world policy decision-making and governance. Through its research and extension programs, and its work with public, private, and community organizations, ASOG continues to develop and foster innovative ideas and approaches in areas such as leadership, poverty eradication, climate change, social accountability, and politics.
II. Scope of Work
The Research Assistant shall be part of the project development team expected to work on the project titled “Conglomerates and Infrastructure Development: Building and Inclusive Recovery in the Next Normal,” the outputs of which shall be submitted to the Ateneo Policy Center Head. In particular, the Research Assistant is expected to:
- Provide assistance in the development of research outputs such as policy briefs, briefing notes, presentations, empirical papers, and other research outputs, specifically by conducting reviews and analyses of literature, data gathering (may include development of research instruments; conduct of field interviews, surveys, FGDs; review of literature, etc.), as well as data analysis and write-up;
- Assist in the planning and coordination of academic events organized by the Center, which may include but are not limited to conferences, seminars, and research colloquia;
- Lead in the development and maintenance of databases (e.g. database of partners, conferences, experts) for the expansion of networks;
- Lead in the completion of reports and other administrative and financial documents as required in the project implementation;
- Perform such other functions as may be assigned by the project team similar to, and related to the functions enumerated above.
III. Description of Education, Competence, and Required Experience
- Undergraduate university degree in economics, public policy and/or international development policy with a focus on quantitative analysis;
- Significant training in statistical analysis, ideally involving experience in applied econometric analysis of social, economic, and development indicators;
- Thematic familiarity with public finance, governance and institutions, and/or political economy;
- Project management experience is an advantage;
- Graphics presentation and research communication skills are an advantage;
- Can efficiently handle and deliver outputs with minimal supervision;
- Has excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in English, and excellent interpersonal communications skills in Filipino; and
- Has excellent organizational skills and able to contribute to team research processes.
