As a response to the nationwide call to improve literacy in the country, the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) and the Department of Education's National Capital Region held a workshop titled "Guiding Change: Empowering Leaders to Champion Literacy" last 2 July at Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.
All 196 public school principals from the DepEd Divisions of Las Piñas City, Malabon City, Marikina City, Muntinlupa City, Quezon City, and San Juan City attended the workshop. Facilitated by Dr Joseph G Dela Cruz of the Ateneo Senior High School, the leadership and team-building workshop drew on theatre-based approaches to support school heads to reflect on their leadership roles, strengthen relationships, and foster collaboration — all essential as they guide literacy initiatives in their respective communities.
Based on feedback gathered from the participants, a great majority (90%) of the principals found the workshop "very useful," with one of them commenting that "the theater-inspired workshop has given us time to reflect on our roles and responsibilities and commitment as school head, thus, recharge ourselves in order to face another challenging school year."
