In a significant move to enhance the professional development of its officers, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is exploring a partnership with the Ateneo School of Government (ASoG). During a recent meeting led by ASoG Dean Dr Jennifer S Oreta and Maj Gen Francisco F Lorenzo Jr, PA, Commander of the AFP Education and Training Doctrine Command (AFPETDC), the two institutions discussed opportunities for collaboration aimed at advancing leadership training and education within the AFP.
Dr Oreta emphasized ASoG's unique focus on leadership training that integrates ethical principles that are aligned with Ignatian values. She proposed the creation of a tailored ladderized program offering customized certificate courses specifically for the Philippine Army (PA), Philippine Navy (PN), and Philippine Air Force (PAF). This initiative aims to address the training needs of AFP Junior Officers, whose professional development has available funding support. To formalize this collaboration, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) will outline the roles and responsibilities of both parties. A pre-meeting is planned to iron out the specifics before ASoG's courtesy visit to AFP Chief of Staff, Gen Romeo S Brawner Jr, PA.
ASoG has also agreed to share expertise and lecturers to enhance the academic landscape, particularly in strategic management and communication. Additionally, there are discussions of collaborating on the AFP's doctrine development program and an invitation to participate in the upcoming Katipunan Conference to showcase the officers’ academic research outputs. To improve the image of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Dr Oreta also proposed documenting and publishing inspiring stories from the AFP officers. These narratives will advance their contributions to enhancing national security and building public trust.
This collaboration aims to raise the standard of leadership training within the AFP, fostering a more capable and ethical officer corps dedicated to serving the nation more effectively.
