Lenten Reflection: H'ear't

05 Apr 2025 | Office for Mission and Identity (OMI)

Heart

Nowadays, it can be very difficult to listen. With all the noise, differing opinions, various platforms to gather information and truth, it can be quite challenging to hear, pay attention and be mindful. This means, though, how necessary it is for us to do so. As the world is so complicated and unsteady, we have to harness that capacity even more.

Perhaps what is crucial is to listen with and to our heart. This means sifting through the many things before us, going deep into our innermost desires, and holding on to what’s truly important and lasting. It may not always be easy but our essence, our meaning and our joy depend on it. And it is possible for in fact, the word ‘heart’ has in its core the word ‘ear’, telling us that it is, indeed, intended for listening. Jesus Himself chose to listen to His very own heart, focusing on the Father’s love to find comfort there even as pain could have been too fearsome and never letting go of His love for us until the very last moment of His human life.

This is a world, this is a life, this is a journey that may be too difficult to bear or to fathom at times but we have been given the greatest compass to use. God speaks to us through the heart and our simplest yet noblest identity resides there. And so while we have been gifted with wonderful minds to analyze and ask or answer the hows or whats, as well as hands to work and fulfill the practical nuances of where and when, the heart gives us the most important reasons and moves us to the why of our existence. These days, how much are you listening to your truest self? How have you paid attention to your most authentic calling? What is the why in your heart?
