Lenten Reflection: If Only

17 Mar 2025 | Office for Mission and Identity (OMI)

If Only

None of us would be immune from dreaming and hoping. In fact, it is our ability to imagine something different, something more or something beyond what we have which makes us survive and thrive, even in the most difficult situations. What makes it unhealthy is when we become stuck with what is not there more than we recognize what already is. If only I were rich, I would give to the poor. If only my parents raised me differently, then I would be better. If only I didn’t have to work, I could do what I really loved. That phrase ‘if only’ is a two-sided sword – it can spur us to courage or it can drown us in helplessness.

Our God might also be a God of if onlys. Watching us from heaven, perhaps the Father said, ‘If only I could let them know how much I love them’. As Jesus was encountering different people – from sinners to saints, from the wealthy in material things to the wealthy in spiritual resources, from the childlike to the childish – he might have thought, ‘If only there is a way I could save them’. And the Spirit, being with us still in our world, is probably telling Itself, ‘If only I could make them feel that I am here’. And so, the Father sent the Son, Jesus offered His life for us, and the Spirit continues to create miracles despite the hurdles we provide – if onlys that moved from fanciful dreaming to fully-lived hoping and doing.

As we start this week, what is your ‘if only’? What ‘if onlys’ do you have in your life that may deserve looking into for possibilities of fulfilment, even if not completely? What are the givens within your reach that may be the pathway to accomplishing the desire part of your ‘if only’? We are not as powerful as God but we are not lacking in power to take steps to claim or reclaim the kind of life, the kind of days, the kind of moments we long for. And where we are is the perfect starting point for even He worked with what’s already present – our woundedness and giftedness, the beautiful disaster that is the world, and the love He could not help Himself but have for us. We can dream and hope, we can make things happen, we can move with greater courage for we are emboldened by no less than He who is of unlimited ways, resources and caring.
