Lenten Reflection: The Names We Are Called

10 Mar 2025 | Office for Mission and Identity (OMI)

The Names We Are Called

For some of us, we are called by different names for different times of our life, different groups of people who know us, or different places we have been. We can be ‘Totoy’ at home that signifies being the youngest in the family regardless of what we’ve accomplished, ‘RBB’ in our place of work where bosses are often identified by their initials, ‘Berth’ to high school classmates, and simply ‘R’ to those closest to us. The history and meaning of such varying names can be entertaining if we consider that after all, each would pertain to one and the same person, with a multitude of experiences and encounters.

God has also referred to us using different names. In the Bible, we can read that we have been pertained to as ‘children’, ‘heirs’, ‘chosen’, ‘friend’, ‘blameless’ among many words He has called us. And in our own personal spaces, if we allow ourself moments of deep communion with Him, we may also hear who we are to Him in a personal and intimate way. Underlying all these is one name, one distinction, one honor that we have been bestowed by the Lord: His beloved.

The truth is that no matter who we are to people and to this world, whatever we may have done or not done, regardless of how we may see or call God, we remain unchanged to Him. Our belovedness in the Lord’s eyes does not depend on us, but instead reflects solely His heart and His choice to keep loving us. We can then ask: if I am able to turn my head when someone calls me by any of my names, do I also acknowledge it when God whispers that I am His beloved? What more, what else, what is it that I need to allow myself to be fully His own? What does Christ’s sacrifice on the cross mean to me, who I am and who I want to be?
