Faculty members gather for “Shift Happens: GenAI in Education”
07 Dec 2024
On 19 November 2024, the Ateneo Teacher Formation Institute (TFI), in partnership with the Institute for the Science and Art of Learning and Teaching (Ateneo SALT), hosted “Shift Happens: GenAI In Education”, facilitated by Fr Johnny C Go, SJ, dean of the Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design (GBSEALD), and Mr Galvin Radley L Ngo, Director of the Ateneo SALT. This special session, held online and onsite at the JJ Atencio Lighthouse for New Learning at the Areté, encouraged faculty members to explore the various implications of artificial intelligence in pedagogical practices and learning design.
Fr Johnny provided a brief background on the evolution of technology, how artificial intelligence has influenced these changes, and the potential risks this technology has when left unexamined.
He further expounded on how educators should not only focus on teaching towards products of a lesson, but also create opportunities to focus on the process. They must keep the balance between being providers of information and facilitators of a conducive learning environment that enables learners to explore for the answer on their own, all the while integrating AI in the process.
It is a collective hope of all faculty members that learners realize that even if AI has the ability to generate outputs such as essays or even ethical theological problems, it still has flaws, of which learners must exert the effort to critically review. Generative artificial intelligence can enhance the process of teaching and learning, as long as educators and learners do not solely rely on it, but learn with it.
