Nama Saya, Sabah exhibit features creative works by SEAS 101 Class of 2024
26 Nov 2024
"Nama Saya," which translates to "My name is" in Malay, presents the Southeast Asian Studies 101 class’ artworks based on their field study in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo from June 24 to July 8, 2024. The Ateneo Initiative for Southeast Asian Studies (AISEAS), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), provided students with an immersive platform to engage with communities and explore regional sustainability practices. Field school collaborators from UiTM and UMS were Mr. Mohd Arsy Ardy Mohd Hardy, Liaison Officer of International Affairs, and Dr. Trixie Marjorie Tangit, Senior Lecturer at the Sociology and Social Anthropology Program, respectively.
The exhibit showcased visual art installations and original musical compositions by SEAS 101 students, reflecting their interpretations of the theme Cultivating Cultures of Societal and Ecological Sustainability. Through these works, the class aimed to share glimpses of the people and landscapes that moved them, the diverse cultures and stories that enriched their journey, and the spirit of Sabah that touched their hearts.
The field study across Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang, Sandakan, and Tawau revealed not only Sabah’s breathtaking landscapes but also the unique harmony that its people have cultivated with their environment. In Sabah, sustainable living is not simply a lifestyle choice; it is a deeply rooted tradition, woven into daily life and customs. Through this exhibit, the students honor that harmony and invite everyone to experience Sabah not only as a destination but as a living ecosystem, where culture and nature are intertwined in a bond of mutual respect and care. The field-school delegation is privileged to share a collection of works that encapsulate their journey and reflections on Sabah:
First, "Greetings from Sabah" by Francine Diño and Nina Ramas is a postcard collection that captures moments of nature and humanity, reflecting Sabah’s everyday beauty. In the spirit of pasalubong (souvenirs), this project brings a piece of Sabah’s vibrant cultural tapestry to Filipino audiences, symbolizing the deep cultural ties between Sabah and the Philippines.
Next, "Modelo" by Ica Lagtapon and Kelsey Sta Maria is inspired by Tausug women’s fashion. It draws inspiration from the Tausug community’s textile and beading traditions, honoring the rich cultural artistry and ecological opportunities we encountered.
"Geomakan" by Erin Aquino is a food map of the diversity of culinary flavors in Sabah.

"Sama-Sama," a symphonic composition by Conn David Gumanoy, integrates motifs from Philippine fiesta traditions with the Philippine national anthem, and Sayang Kinabalu, a Sabahan folk song, celebrating our shared heritage in a unique musical tapestry.
"Rakyat and Roots" by Yani Cristina Lazaro is a photo wall featuring Sabah’s ecotourism sites, capturing the balance between sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. This work also features individuals who make invaluable contributions to sustainability and environmental stewardship in their communities.
"Forwarding Green Diplomacy" by Jaye Felicity Maneclang is a poster presentation on sustainable ecotourism between Mount Hamiguitan in the Philippines and Kinabalu Park in Sabah, highlighting both nations’ shared dedication to protecting these natural treasures.
Lastly, "Harapan" by Alexandria Meña, an original painting on recycled canvas, is inspired by the mission of Stairway to Hope, an alternative learning center in Kota Kinabalu. This piece highlights education as a guiding light, empowering children to reach for their potential.
This endeavor by the Ateneo Initiative for Southeast Asian Studies and the Field Study delegates further boasts the university’s participation in intercultural dialogues. Truly, this level of integrated output in fostering broader understanding in various fields serves as a benchmark for future Field Studies within Southeast Asia.
