Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines

The School of Humanities proudly congratulates Andrea Anne I. Trinidad of the Kagawaran ng Filipino for receiving the SOH Outstanding Scholarly Work Award for 2023 for her groundbreaking research, Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines. The abstract is as follows:
Considered the culmination of previous research centered on the fascinating Filipino romance community known as #RomanceClass, Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines seeks to map the existing ecosystems of romance production and consumption in the country. Shaped by the interaction of political forces, such as Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s dictatorial rule, and economic realities—particularly the evident social stratification within the population that gives rise to enduring social values tied to the use of English and Tagalog—romance, in this work, is consciously uprooted from the dominant Anglo-American perspective and positioned as a genre that can be discussed using Filipino experience and sensibility as a starting point. Compounding this vital articulation of the “Filipino” in the realm of popular romance, #RomanceClass and the stories they bring to the table, along with the initiatives they consistently develop in the processes of production, circulation, and appreciation, represent a significant phenomenon that enriches the cultural landscape of the genre.
