Embracing the unexpected: My immersion program in China
06 Aug 2024 | Sandra S Vergara, III AB Diplomacy and International Relations
At the onset of summer, I found myself grappling with a nagging sense of regret for not making early summer plans for internships and programs. Determined not to let another summer slip by without an academic opportunity, I looked up last-minute chances.
In perfect timing, I was scrolling through my inbox when Ateneo de Manila University's Office of the Assistant Vice President for Social Development, Environment, and Community Engagement sent an email about a University Immersion Program (UIP) in Chengdu. It’s an annual program organized by Sichuan University since 2012 with the aim of bringing students worldwide to ‘stimulate their global awareness and intercultural communications,’ as per their website. From that statement alone, I was drawn as an International Relations student and promptly sent my interest letter.
Aside from the main gist of the UIP, I got even more excited when I got accepted and found out that Ateneo’s nominees were to participate in the service-learning program in collaboration with Hong Kong Polytechnic University on promoting positive child development and family relationships. With my passion for advocating for children and education, I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to gain insights on how to further this cause in the future through global lenses.
From observing the on-site service to listening to the post-processing sessions of professors from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, I was in awe of how effective their approaches were. Watching them integrate the learnings of child and youth development and service to others into real life was inspiring. While the language barrier was evident, the conversations I had with the middle schoolers, volunteers, and fellow international students will always have a special place in my heart because of how genuinely we wanted to connect.
Beyond academics, the UIP also offered us the chance to explore the unique West Chinese culture. The volunteers who accompanied us were incredibly kind, guiding us around the city, giving us insights into what it’s like to live there, and introducing us to the delicious local cuisine!
Looking back, the trip felt serendipitous and unpredictable from the get-go. I am just filled with immense gratitude to Ateneo and Sichuan University for letting me take part in this program, where I had the privilege of meeting new friends, experiencing new cultures, and gaining invaluable insights. This summer program was truly a transformative experience that I will cherish forever.
