Empowering innovation: Successful design thinking workshop hosted for Meta Lab Indonesia

An online design thinking workshop hosted by the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) proved to be insightful for Meta Lab (PT Meta Lab Nusantara). The workshop, held via Zoom on 9 May 2024 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM (GMT+8), aimed to enhance the problem-solving capabilities and innovative potential of Meta Lab Indonesia's startup members.

Among the facilitators were Mr Steve Chaves and Ms Mariela Alcaparas from AIPO, along with Ms Garima Sahdev from WIPO. The primary objectives of the workshop were to introduce creative problem-solving techniques to teams and organizations, build participants' creative confidence, and unlock their innovation potential.

It also aimed to teach organizations how to engage and empathize with their users and stakeholders, define and identify customer problems, generate new ideas and projects to solve identified issues, create rapid, low-cost prototypes, and test and validate these ideas with actual users and stakeholders.

The workshop utilized a design thinking approach, emphasizing empathy and human-centeredness. Participants engaged in activities that fostered dialogue, active communication, and a clear vision of their goals. The methodology involved re-framing problems in human-centric ways, brainstorming ideas, and hands-on prototyping and testing.

Throughout the workshop, participants were guided through a series of activities focused on empathy, problem definition, idea generation, prototyping, and testing. The key exercise involved was about designing a better gift-giving experience, which helped participants understand their partners' needs and challenges more deeply. By working in pairs, participants identified main problems, ideated individually, and generated ideas from different viewpoints.

Despite an online setting, the participants produced several innovative low-cost prototypes, including solutions for setting screen time for children, a men's personalized gear shop, and a mobile app for sourcing and comparing gifts.

The workshop successfully equipped participants with practical design thinking skills, fostering a culture of innovation and empathetic problem-solving within their organization. By the end of the session, participants felt more confident in their ability to tackle challenges creatively and collaboratively. This initiative between WIPO and the AIPO continues to pave the way to drive business and societal advancements through technology and human-centered innovation.
