PH joins globe-spanning Dawn Chorus live audio stream for the first time through AJHS faculty Paolo Paculan
03 May 2024
Sunday, 5 May 2024, is International Dawn Chorus Day. For the past ten years, May 5th has also been the occasion for Reveil to livestream audio of its 24+1 hour dawn chorus worldwide. Reveil is a collaborative sound and radio project that circles the Earth on live audio streams at daybreak, allowing listeners to hear the sounds of dawn from the planet’s 24 basic time zones live. (Reveil’s 2023 “Dawn Chorus” broadcast featured 145 streams from a wide range of environments.) This year marks Reveil’s 11th International Dawn Chorus Day broadcast, and the Philippines will join the stream for the very first time and do so from the Ateneo de Manila University campus!
Paolo Ven B. Paculan, soundscape recordist and Filipino teacher at the Ateneo de Manila Junior High School, will set up the stream from the Solar Building of the Manila Observatory (MO) on May 5. “I heard about the project while attending a Soundcamp early this year,” he relates. “I wanted the Philippines with all its biodiversity to be represented. And, I thought, why not stream from the Ateneo, in a place as historic as the MO?” Here is the link to Mr. Paculan's Reveil streaming page: https://streams.soundtent.org/.../utc8_-b4d6a5f1-6fdd...
In the spirit of Laudato Si’ and its Integral Ecology thrust, the Ateneo de Manila will relay the live audio stream on this page. The stream can be heard as soon as it begins at 5 am Saturday in the UK (Saturday, 4 May 2024, 12 noon in the Philippines). Following the Dawn Chorus stream from Melbourne, Australia, the Philippines/Ateneo leg will begin at 5:09 am on Sunday, 5 May 2024 (timezone UTC+8), and end at 5:30 am. (The broadcast will then continue with Hong Kong’s recordists streaming the sounds of their country greeting the dawn.)
