Lenten Reflection: I Am Yours
28 Mar 2024
There are persons, causes and things that we have committed to consciously. At the same time, even without obvious or formal pronouncements of loyalty or devotion, there would also be those that we are unconsciously dedicating ourself to. Whatever the case may be, our time, energy and actions would certainly be affected by those that we have chosen, by those to whom we say in definite terms or in more subtle ways ‘I am yours’. They affect our day, they shape our years, they influence our life.
The whole passion of Christ is God telling us He is ours, that He is committed to us, that He is not half-hearted with love for us. For the Father to send His very own Son speaks of unparalleled promise to be with us. For the Son to choose to be humbled and to die for our sake concretizes that there is nothing He would not do if only to let us know that we are of utmost importance to Him. For the Spirit to continuously manifest itself even with the darkness and negligence we have shown Jesus during His earthly life and until now when we turn our back on Him reflects the unending resoluteness to choose us. ‘I am yours’ – no one has ever meant or lived this statement more than God to us.
The Lord has clearly and perfectly chosen us. There are no loopholes, cracks or gaps in His commitment. While we cannot match such unbreakable and dedicated love, we can choose to let it embrace us, move us, change us. And that in itself is our way of committing to what is best for us. On these last days of Lent, we can look at these aspects of who we are: To whom and to what have you dedicated yourself and your life? Where is the Creator in those that you have chosen? How does God’s promise and fulfilment of His ‘I am yours’ matter to you?
