This year’s Kyudai-Ateneo Philosophy and Education (KAPE) Colloquium was held at Ateneo de Manila University last 12-14 February 2024. An ongoing collaboration between Kyushu University's School of Education and the Ateneo de Manila University’s Department of Philosophy, it was participated in by faculty members, researchers, and students from both Kyushu University and Ateneo de Manila. This was the colloquium’s fourth run and its first to be held in the Philippines.

With the theme “From Well-Being to Empowerment in Education,” the colloquium featured a two-part workshop on narrative approaches to education, led by Ms Catherine Sevilla-Liu with Dr Anton Sevilla-Liu of Kyushu University. In addition, faculty members and graduate students from the two universities delivered the following paper presentations:

  • “Should moral outrage be encouraged in the classroom?” (Ms Anamarie Avecilla, Ateneo de Manila University)

  • “A framework of formation and teaching built on kwentuhan (exchanging stories): a presentation on Ateneo’s ladderized formation program by the Office for Social Concern and Involvement.” (Mr Sergio Gabriel, Ateneo de Manila University)

  • “Empowering individuals through education from a schema therapy perspective.” (Ms HIMORI Sakiko, Kyushu University)

  • “Asserting the centrality of kwentuhan in the classroom” (Dr Lovelyn Paclibar, Ateneo de Manila University)

  • “Interpreting Arendt’s notion of storytelling in light of her analysis of the trial of Adolf Eichmann” (Mr Beaujorne Ramirez, Ateneo de Manila University)

The event concluded with a public lecture titled "Contextual Approaches to Clinical Pedagogy: Philosophy and Psychology in Education," delivered by Dr Anton Sevilla-Liu.

The organization of KAPE 2024 was spearheaded by Dr Lovelyn Paclibar and Dr Rowena A. Azada-Palacios of the Ateneo de Manila Department of Philosophy, and  Dr Anton Sevilla-Liu and Ms Catherine Sevilla-Liu of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Kyushu University. Established in 2017, KAPE has run regular colloquia organized around the connections between philosophy and education, including the formal field of philosophy of education, philosophical education, and experimental applications of philosophy to educational topics. This year's colloquium was funded by a Kwan Laurel Grant through the Ateneo School of Humanities; additional support was given by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
