Sunday, 4 February 2024 marked the 40th day since the passing of Dr Ricardo Abad, Professor Emeritus of Ateneo de Manila University, a cherished member of the community, and loved by his colleagues, students, family, and friends. To honor his legacy, a special program titled “Abad for the Ages” was held at the Hyundai Hall of Areté, drawing a diverse crowd to pay tribute to his life and contributions.

As guests arrived at the venue, they were presented with booklets containing Dr Eviota’s Memoire of Dr Abad, providing insights into his impactful journey and details about an upcoming grant. Additionally, copies of Dr Abad’s memoir, “Build & Destroy,” penned by his former students and colleagues, were made available, with proceeds supporting the grant in his honor.

The commemoration continued with a poignant mass presided over by University President Fr Bobby Yap, accompanied by Fr Jett Villarin, Fr Kit Bautista, Fr Mario Francisco, and Fr Jason Dy. Before the mass concluded, attendees were treated to a stirring performance of the Igal Dance, choreographed by Dr Matthew Sta Maria and aptly titled “Jesu,” with guitar accompaniment by Maestro Lester Demetillo.

The program, meticulously directed by Ron Capinding, unfolded through a series of vignettes and performances, each capturing different facets of Dr Abad’s life journey:

- Opening Number: A performance titled “Seven Ages of Man,” directed by Dr Anton Juan, set the stage for the evening’s reflections.

- Vignettes: Each vignette delved into various stages of Dr Abad’s life, from infancy to his final years, with performances ranging from theatrical renditions to heartfelt videos and live spiels.

- Closing Number: The evening culminated in a soulful performance by Bullet Dumas, leaving attendees with a sense of reverence for Dr Abad’s enduring legacy.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of individuals worked tirelessly to bring the commemoration to life, from production design to stage management and graphic design.

Additionally, during the program, a significant announcement was made. The establishment of The Ricardo Gianchand Abad Endowment Fund for Sciences and the Arts in Areté - Ateneo de Manila University. This grant aims to support outreach and knowledge production activities that fuse and interweave science and the arts in Ateneo and the community, creating scenarios for a better world for Filipinos. This initiative embodies Dr Abad’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and his vision for a brighter future for the Philippines.
