Ateneo still top Philippine school in 2024 THE World University Rankings

Ateneo de Manila University continues its run as the top Philippine institution in the latest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

Ateneo came in the 1001-1200 bracket of the 2024 THE WUR, a significant change from the institution’s debut at the 351-400 bracket the previous year.

Times Higher Education implemented a new methodology for the latest rankings table, which significantly affected the resulting rankings of many of the institutions in the list. Despite the change in overall ranking, Ateneo continues to be the top performing Philippine school out of a total of 4 that were ranked.

“It is an honor for us to be one of only four Filipino schools in the rankings, and proof that our work in teaching, research, and social engagement is recognized here at home and abroad,” said Fr Roberto Yap SJ, University President.

The new THE WUR methodology uses 18 performance indicators, up from the previous 13, "to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons" according to the organization.

These indicators are then grouped into five pillars: Teaching (learning environment); Research environment (volume, income, and reputation); Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence); International outlook (staff, students, and research); and Industry (income and patents).

Ateneo’s performance by pillar is as follows:

  • Teaching (number 646 overall, 29.5% of overall score)
  • Research Quality (rank 952, 30% of score)
  • Industry (rank 1248, 4% of score)
  • International Outlook (rank 1371, 7.5% of score)
  • Research Environment (rank 1543, 29% of score)

The University had an overall score of 28.3-32.6, according to THE.

“I would like to congratulate everyone in the university – all of our academic and non-academic personnel, students, and all of our other stakeholders and partners – for a job well done,” Yap said.

“And as I always say: these rankings are only guideposts in our journey as a University. So today we celebrate, and let us make this piece of good news an additional source of inspiration as we continue to work to be a force for good in the world,” he added.

The full methodology is explained by THE in this article.

The THE World University Rankings is one of the most authoritative global institutional ranking tables, first released in 2004. This year a total of 1,904 institutions were ranked.

Aside from this recognition, the University continues to be ranked in the THE Impact Rankings, which is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.
