Hot off the Press: Babaylan Sing Back

New Release

Babaylan Sing Back: Philippine Shamans and Voice, Gender, and Place by Grace Nono

Drawing on Grace Nono’s two earlier award-winning books, with new analyses and research, especially in urban and diasporic areas, Babaylan Sing Back incites decolonial reflection on the Philippines' five centuries of colonial and neocolonial histories. Structured around themes of voice, sex and gender, and place, the book depicts the embodied voices of a number of Philippine ritual specialists – popularly known as “Babaylan” – in ways that complicate dominant discourses that portray these functionaries either as witches and purveyors of superstition or as symbols of gender equality and anticolonial resistance.

Nono uses “sing” in the book’s title to signal many of the ritual specialists’ roles as oral singers and speakers and to index their often undifferentiated acts of singing and speaking. She shares that “to ‘sing back’ is not just to describe the world, it is to transform it.”

Hot off the Press: Martial Law in the Philippines

New Release

Martial Law in the Philippines: Lessons & Legacies, 1972-2022 edited by Edilberto C. De Jesus and Ivyrose S. Baysic

The writers in this book, who lived through martial law, take their readers through the ups and downs of seven presidential administrations since the 1972 declaration. Each specialist focuses on a particular topic. These topics are clustered into three parts–Society and Culture, Political Economy and Governance, and Peace and Security. Under Society and Culture, readers can select from cultural politics, dictatorial fantasies, populism and authoritarianism, religion, urban poor organizing, indigenous people, Chinese-Filipino identity, and Filipino values in a global context. Political Economy and Governance cover party politics, electoral reform, media roles, the Constitution, population management, and crony economic governance. While the Peace and Security chapters spotlight terror and violence, the move from Marcos Sr. to Marcos Jr., and the Left.

Hot off the Press: False Nostalgia

New Release

False Nostalgia: The Marcos “Golden Age” Myths and How to Debunk Them by JC Punongbayan

False Nostalgia aims to tear down the myriad myths about the Marcoses that have proliferated for decades. The book's chapters start with a common myth or misconception about Marcos Sr.’s martial law and its economic aspects, followed by a quick rebuttal. Using hard facts and data written in accessible language, the book deep dives into various aspects of the Marcosian economy—from its infrastructure spree and trade and industrial policy that widely led to poverty and hunger. It gives the economic and political milieu of the time in both context and detail.

Limited copies of the book are available at the Solidaridad Bookstore, Ayala Museum, and Fully Booked BGC, Powerplant, and UPTC. Reprints will be available at the end of the month.

New eBook

People Power: An Eyewitness History edited by Monina A. Mercado

The book is an eyewitness account of the revolution. It is different from the usual such account in that it is not one, but several witnesses speaking. It also speaks of a different sort of revolution, one that is nonviolent, fought not with arms but with what has since been not the strength of an army nor a political grouping, but the power of prayer. They feel they have been called “people power.”

The digital edition of People Power: An Eyewitness History edited by Monina A. Mercado is published by Ateneo de Manila University Press.
