Revisit Martial Law in the Philippines with new book from Ateneo University Press

The Ateneo University Press launched the new title, Martial Law in the Philippines: Lessons and Legacies, 1972-2022, this February 21, 2023, at the Ateneo School of Government, Ateneo de Manila University. Edited by Edilberto C. De Jesus and Ivyrose S. Baysic, Martial Law in the Philippines is composed of essays revisiting the martial law regime imposed by Ferdinand Marcos Sr. fifty years ago. This book provides information and analyses of its legacy of complex and contentious issues that still require resolution.

Lead editor and senior research fellow at Ateneo School of Government Edilberto De Jesus shares that the gravity of martial law has not found a proper place in the preparation of teachers responsible for educating elementary and secondary students of Philippine history. He stresses that they could not give their students what they did not have. "This failure," according to De Jesus, "left the martial law narrative vulnerable to distortion as time darkened historical memory and technology powered–through social media and its rapid spread of spurious 'alternative facts'–an opportunity for politically motivated efforts to rewrite and revise history." Thus, a compelling need to publish books such as Martial Law in the Philippines.

The writers in this book, who lived through martial law, take their readers through the ups and downs of seven presidential administrations since the 1972 declaration. Each specialist focuses on a particular topic. These topics are clustered into three parts–Society and Culture, Political Economy and Governance, and Peace and Security. Under Society and Culture, readers can select from cultural politics, dictatorial fantasies, populism and authoritarianism, religion, urban poor organizing, indigenous people, Chinese-Filipino identity, and Filipino values in a global context. Political Economy and Governance cover party politics, electoral reform, media roles, the Constitution, population management, and crony economic governance. While the Peace and Security chapters spotlight terror and violence, the move from Marcos Sr. to Marcos Jr., and the Left.

Ateneo de Manila University Professor and chapter author Mary Racelis shares that “almost everything you ever wanted to know about martial law and its long-term effects leaps out of these pages. Genuine gold right there in eighteen compelling chapters!”

Martial Law in the Philippines: Lessons and Legacies, 1972-2022 edited by Edilberto C. De Jesus and Ivyrose S. Baysic is published by Bughaw, an imprint of Ateneo de Manila University Press.
