Ateneo Art Awards 2022

Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG) proudly presents the participating artists for this year’s Fernando Zóbel Prizes for Visual Art (FZA) Return Exhibition, and the shortlisted writers for the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma (PKL) Prizes in Art Criticism. The opening of the exhibition and announcement of winning writers will be on 19 November 2022, Saturday, at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté.

In 2021, the Fernando Zóbel Prizes for Visual Art adopted a biennial schedule, wherein the visual arts prize alternates with the Ateneo Art Awards Return Exhibition. This offers a venue for previous winners of the prize to showcase their recent and current endeavors with their practice. This year’s return exhibition focuses on winners in 2016 and 2017 who were invited to residencies in the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Australia. Martha Atienza, Nathalie Dagmang, Gale Encarnacion, Cian Dayrit, and Costantino Zicarelli completed month-long residencies between 2017 and 2018. The Ateneo Art Awards Fernando Zóbel Prizes for Visual Art (FZA) Return Exhibition will run from 19 November 2022 until 4 March 2023.

Focusing on the theme “Fresh Winds and New Light: Forecasting Change,” the 2022 Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prizes in Art Criticism shortlist features six writers in the English category and four in the Filipino category. The writers include Dondie Casanova, Francesca Locsin, Kaye O’Yek, Nicole Primero, Nicole Soriano, and Czyka Tumaliuan for the English category; Roy Cagalingan, Gian Carlo Delgado, Jord Earving Gadingan, and Vladimeir Gonzales for the Filipino category. The shortlisted entries will be available on the Vital Points microsite after the awards ceremony.

Two winners will be selected from the English category. The winner of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for ArtAsiaPacific will contribute six articles to the bimonthly Hong Kong-based publication for a year. The winner of the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for The Philippine Star will be awarded a monthly column for a year under ‘Platforms’ in the Arts and Culture section of the paper.

One winner from the Filipino category will receive the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Katipunan Journal, with the opportunity to contribute a total of two articles to the biannual research publication for a year.

In addition to the opportunity to have their written works published, one of the winners will be invited for a month-long writer’s residency by AAA residency partner, Orange Project, a creative hub in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The Ateneo Art Awards 2022 is co-presented by Ateneo Art Gallery, Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation Inc. and The Philippine Star; in partnership with with ArtAsiaPacific and Katipunan Journal; writer's residency partner Orange Project Bacolod; international visual art residency partners La Trobe University, Liverpool Hope University and Artesan Gallery + Studio; and local visual art residency partners ABungalow, CASA San Miguel, No Space, Project Space Pilipinas.
